Mr. Mojo Rising

Mr. Mojo Rising

The is my tribute blog to Mr. Mojo Risin’ (Jim Morrison) and Mojo magazine.

I have always dug the word, “Mojo”. Cute yet mysterious, mythical and menacing.

Mojo is an all-encompassing word that conjures magic, charisma, power, luck, energy, influence, confidence, spirit, shine, strength, talisman, attraction, sexual prowess, vibration, spell, and karma etc.

1) MR. MOJO RISIN’

“MR. MOJO RISIN'” is an anagram for Jim Morrison. He sang this repeated phrase in his iconic song, “L.A. Woman”.

Jim Morrison is the charismatic singer and composer of the band, the Doors. Morrison was a key member of the infamous and exclusive 27 Club where all the iconic rock star members died at the young age of 27. He was also part of the 27 “J” Club, whom all members died within a year of each other, comprising of Jimi (Hendrix, 18 September 1970), Janis (Joplin, 4 October 1970) and Jim (3 July 1971). All were young and talented superstars; all were taken away much too soon; and their record labels are still churning out their unreleased music till today.

2) MOJO MAGAZINE

Mojo magazine is my all-time favourite music magazine. What a cool, short, succinct name for a music magazine. Awesome covers, great in-depth journalism, great subjects, great layout! It’ has garnered deep respect from the rock stars and rock bands themselves. These days, everybody hopes to be on the cover of Mojo magazine.

The magazine began on 15 October 1993 by UK publisher Emap. They wanted to follow the success of Q magazine, targetting the baby-boomers with classic rock aesthetics. I must have probably bought the first fifty (+/-) issues. I still read their e-magazines till this day. Their main stay subjects rotate between the likes of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, the Who, Neil Young, Paul Weller, David Bowie, and the Kinks etc.

I recently bought the November 2026 issue featuring the complementary Neil Young “The Gold Rush” CD, bottom right of above image.
