Herb Greene

I want to pen a Tribute to my legendary rock photographer buddy, Herb Greene.

I was browsing through the latest issue of Mojo magazine when I saw an entry about the passing of Herb Greene (1942-2025).

Herbert Bower Greene, what a great and apt name for a San Francisco flower child!

Herb Greene is my colleague at Morrison Hotel Gallery. Herb is known for his great photography on Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and other San Francisco bands.

Me and the legendary Herb Greene in New York City (above image).

I had met Herb in New York City and enjoyed a few fun email exchanges with him. He liked the rosewood knick knack pop memorabilia displays in my home.

Herb Green’s a fun guy to hang out with. I miss him greatly.

I share with you readers, my fond Herb Greene and Jim Marshall story – where I was honoured to hang out with the two Maestros at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in 2009.

Just three rock photographers sharing a beautiful fun moment together.

The humble Herb Greene, when he enters Morrison Hotel Gallery in Soho, New York City upon seeing Jim, (gamely) immediately bows to the great Jim Marshall (above image), who happened to be occupied on his phone. All this crazy shenanigan in front of the nonchalant MHG staff.

Herb Greene does the “Jim Marshall Bow” (above image), from the back angle. Jim continues talking. I’m surprised Jim didn’t use the prostrate Herb as a foot stool. Kidding.

My Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane seminal CDs featuring Herb Green’s band images on the album covers (above image). I will fondly think of Herb whenever I play my Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane CDs.

Herb Greene passed away on 3 March 2025 at his home in Maynard, Massachusetts and joined his buddy Jim Marshall in photography heaven. Please google Herb Greene for his iconic rock images and awesome rock accomplishments. Do read my previous tribute blog on Jim Marshall.

R.I.P. Mr. Greene!
