Angine De Poitrine

Angine De Poitrine

Today, 30 July 2026, my absurd sonic nourishment arrived in the mail. The Vol.1 and Vol.2 albums of the masked experimental math rock duo, Angine De Poitrine, formed in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada.

Angine De Poitrine” literally translates from French to “strangling of the chest”. Well, to achieve this sonic effect, one must ramp up the amplification volume to 11. Blasto with gusto!

In formal French medical jargon, “Angine De Poitrine” means “angina pectoris” or severe chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

The dynamic duo, known for performing anonymously in full-body black and white polka dotted costumes and oversized paper-mache masks, comprises of Khn de Poitrine (guitar , bass) and Klek de Poitrine (drums) .

Think Black Keys with advanced mathematics degrees. Heads full of Rhythms and Theorems.

My Angine De Poitrine Vol.1 (2024) and Vol.2 (2026) CDs (above image). My first thoughts on these albums are the short play-times. Vol.1 clocks in at only 34:32 minutes and Vol.2 a tad longer at 38:4 minutes. I guess the duo is going for kwality not kwantity.

The duo describes themselves as a “mantra -rock Dada Pythago-Cubist orchestra” composed of “space-time voyagers”, reflecting thier fusion of technical complexity, hypnotic repetition, and absurdist aesthetics. Their music influences include Frank Zappa, King Gizzard& the Lizard Wizard, Leo Brouwer, John Scofield, and Gentle Giant.

The use of triangles and pyramids in their imagery is inspired by the Ha! Ha! Pyramid in their home city of Saguenay, Quebec in Canada.

When I see the long-nosed Khn de Poitrine, the guitarist/bassist, I cannot help but think of my ex-Slipknot long-nosed buddy, Chris Fehn.

Every once in a Chicago blues moon, does a band come along and create a delightful kink in the mundane music trajectory. Angine De Poitrine does it in triangular spades. I’m also thinking of bands’ with ground-breaking catchy inaugural albums like the B-52s, Jim Jones All-Stars, and Ting Tings. Do read my “Jim Jones All-Stars” blog.

Live long and prosper, Angine De Poitrine!
