Everything has its Season, especially in Music. As of 6 May 2026, I was in the curious mood for Cool Jazz and have been buying up those inexpensive Classic Album Collection Jazz Box Sets.
I’ve heard the names, but not their music. I already have the CD collections of Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
It’s time to get acquainted with the greatness of Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal, Wes Montgomery, Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley, and Max Roach. Better late than never, I say.
These Classic Album Collection Jazz Box Sets cost about S$20-25. Depending on the specific boxset, it can even squeeze 8 albums into 4 CDs. What a bargain!. The music is still amazingly fresh after half a century and the sound quality is great!
I decided that I wanted some mood music in the home – sans vocals. Hence the Cool Jazz mainly by the legendary Jazz Maestros from the 1950-60s. So Relaxing! The Maestros’ Instruments are their Vocals.
My Recently Acquired Jazz Classic Album Collection Jazz Box Sets Stash (above image). All the above were acquired since 6 May 2026. I was thirsting for a genre of rich music that I kept delaying my appreciation; to relax to and get finally acquainted with – the Past Masters of Cool Jazz.
I tip my pork pie hat to John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal, Wes Montgomery, Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey (Jazz Messengers), Max Roach, and of course, Miles Davis.
I am might proud to have attended Oscar Peterson’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl in the 1990s.
