I want to pay my photographic respects to Stephanie Chernikowski (1941-2026). Stephanie was an iconic fixture in capturing the punk scene in New York City. At 84, she transcended to the heavens on 1 April 2026 in Manhattan.
Born in Beaumont, Texas in 1941, Stephanie moved to New York City in 1975, embedding herself, capturing mostly in b/w film, tenaciously documenting the early punk and post-punk bands in the Bowery, SoHo and the East Village vicinities.
Stephanie photographed everyone including Bob Dylan, Ramones, Mick Jagger, Blondie, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith Group, Talking Heads, Television, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Johnny Cash, Run-DMC, and Kurtis Blow etc.
Stephanie’s photographs have graced major books, newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Rolling Stone and the Village Voice, etc.
Stephanie’s punk photo works are featured in exhibitions in the US and Europe.

I had the supreme honour to hang out with the down-to-earth, humble and fun Stephanie at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, then situated in the Bowery. The former site of CBGB. MHG’s HQ shop is in Prince Street.
Stephanie was fun to hang out with and we got along like long-time pals with cameras, sharing delicious tales from the Road and F-stops stories.
In my life, I’m fortunate and honoured to have hung out with the most iconic rock photographers that ever walked the earth – Jim Marshall, Barry Feinstein, Henry Diltz, Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Bob Gruen, Ken Regan, Mick Rock, Baron Wolman, Herb Greene, Danny Clinch, Rowland Scherman, Ross Halfin, Chris Stein, Kate Simon, Joseph Rosen, and Paul Natkin, etc.
