Richard Davis (1944 – 2025), the founder, vocalist and keyboardist of Supertramp left us way too soon, on 6 September 2025.
This is my heart-felt tribute to a Grade-A composer and muso maestro – Rick Davis.
Supertramp is one of my favourite top-tier bands, up there amongst the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Santana, Bee Gees, Electric Light Orchestra and Beach Boys.
My favourite Rick Davis songs from the Supertramp portfolio include – “Goodbye Stranger”, “Downstream”, “From Now On”, “Crime Of The Century”, “Bloody Well Right”, “My Kind Of Lady”, “Cannonball”, “Just Another Nervous Wreck”, “Ain’t Nobody But Me”, “Another Man’s Woman” and “It’s A Hard World”.
The greatness of Supertramp is really about the creative interplay (crossfire hurricane) between Rick Davis (Lennon Yang) and Roger Hodgson (McCartney Yin). The creative force between Davis and Hodgson, often times combustive, brought mojo magic into their Supertramp epic songs. Do read my previous “Roger Hodgson” blog.
Due to creative and personality differences, Roger Hodgson left the group after their “Famous Last Words” album and concert tour in 1983. Davis remained in the band, released six more Supertramp albums. Davis also had his other band Ricky and the Rockets.

With Rick Davis’ sad passing, I will listen to Supertramp songs with a tinge of melancholia, especially my favourite Rick Davis brilliance – “Downstream“, “From Now On” and “Goodbye Stranger“.
Serene Travels, Super Tramp!
