Gary Numan

Gary Numan

This is my blog tribute to Gary Numan. My copy of his just released remastered 45th Anniversary of his “Telekon” album (with four newly discovered tracks) arrived two days ago. Also arrived in the same Amazon parcel is Pink Floyd’s obscure “Ummagumma” album. What can I say, my music taste is diverse. Good music is good music.

Born Gary Anthony James Webb (1958), I gravitated immediately to his hit single, “Cars” from his 1979 “Pleasure Principle” album.

Then I bought his band Tubeway Army’s “Replicas” 1979 album with the hit song “Are Friends’ Electric?”.

Regarded as a pioneer of electronic music, Numan successfully marketed himself as an androgynous android persona.

Over the years, Gary Numan had sold over 10 million records worldwide. In 2017, he received the prestigious Ivor Novello Award.

I acquired the First Recordings album series for the 40th Anniversary of “Pleasure Principle” and “Replicas” when they were released in 2019.

As a teenager who loved all things mechanical, Numan’s professional crossroad was either going the pilot or pop star route. He wisely chose the more lucrative pop star route. BUT he never left his pilot dream. In 1980, he acquired his first aeroplane, a Cessna 182 Skylane. In 1981, he formed Numanair, a charter flight company. Also in 1981, Numan successfully flew around the world in his Piper PA-31 Navajo plane. Numan also holds licenses for flying piston and turbine helicopters.

Literally a high flyer, Gary Numan continues churning out new top-selling albums and songs as well as piloting aeroplanes.
