Stage Portraits - Eddie Sung

My Special Blend of Concert Photography is shooting Stage Portraits. I try to shoot the rock stars (subjects) as if it’s a portrait session, shot in my studio, except it’s all captured from the stage.

Although I use a digital camera these days, I still shoot as if I’m shooting with film, i.e. I will press the shutter when the right moment arrives. I do not chase the shots.

Savouring my Zen moment, I instinctively shoot my “One Shot, One Kill” style of photography. I never shoot in Burst (“spray and pray”) mode.

Sometimes, if the rock star sings a favourite song of mine, I will even, momentarily, put down my camera to savour the song.

It helps that I’m not a hired hand.

I want my Stage Portraits to count, to have Soul, to be Elegant and to have a sprinkle of Mystique. Yes, and to be Spontaneous.

Each stage portrait takes only a split-second to capture. That fleeting moment when the rock star and you connects and accords you with a kind “visual gift”. With the unspoken agreement that the visual gift is only yours if you’re able to capture it.

You know, instinctively, the rock star is visually according you with “something extra” in that split-second “blink and it’s gone” moment.

A closing of the eyes, a nice smile, clenching of the fist, kneeling down in submission, a finger pointing straight into your soul, turning around and striking a poignant pose, enjoying a little personal smile, savouring a reflective Zen moment, taking a break from singing.
